Lee Blessing’s Eleemosynary is funny and often moving portrait of three generations of extraordinary women inextricably tied together through loss, abandonment, reconciliation and love. Dorothea, a woman trapped by societal norms, hid her brilliance behind eccentricity. She dreams of literal and figurative flight for her daughter, Artie. But Artie, feeling suffocated by her mother’s eccentricity, spends years trying to escape. It is the birth of Artie’s own daughter, Echo, which reignites Dorothea’s dreams of flight. Jealous of their connection, Artie walks away for good. Echo, however, is not a child that is easily left behind. The abstract nature of time, the beauty of words, and the undefinable power of love make Eleemosynary a theatrical experience that will long resonate with audiences.
