July 2013 Business Spotlight: The Vanity Haus
Co-owner RJ Rodriguez states “Dressing up is a way to express myself without saying any words. This is why I perceive fashion to be part of everyday life and an important design aesthetic.” Before the concept of The Vanity Haus took shape, RJ Rodriguez found his niche in photography and styling. His first challenge was trying to find unique and extraordinary fashion locally to photograph. After what seemed an endless search, RJ stumbled upon one of a kind items such as platform boots, sequin gowns, and studded jackets. After increasing his collection, RJ wanted to give these gems a home.
RJ Rodriguez describes his style to be reflective of his personality which is ever evolving and growing. He states that he admires the style icons that are chameleons when it comes to fashion. Co-owner Brian Hopper illustrates his personal style as preppy, sophisticated, and can be recognized by his bow tie and handlebar mustache. Overall they feel that great style comes from within. “From the moment a person walks into their closet to the moment they walk out the door, they should exuberate confidence and a sense of pride in what they are wearing,” says RJ.
The Vanity Haus is derived from a design school in Germany. RJ Rodriguez believes that the design school was on the cutting edge of design and shaped the way we design things today. Thus The Vanity Haus begun to emerge as the cutting edge of fashion, styling, and photography retail store of downtown Riverside. This multi—faceted business also includes fashion show coordination. Brian Hopper and RJ Rodriguez have assisted in downtown Riverside’s initiative to brand the downtown area as a regional destination fashion district.
Brian Hopper and RJ Rodriguez believe that it is important for them to be a part of their local community. “The community should know who we are and what we do,” says RJ. “We chose downtown Riverside as our location for the Vanity Haus because it is a perfect blend of big city and small town atmosphere. Downtown Riverside is also very rich in arts and culture; which makes it very receptive to everything we offer.”
First time customers to The Vanity Haus can expect unique outfits that people can’t find in basic department stores. “People don’t have to worry about anyone having the same blouse or dress on at an event,” says RJ. The Vanity Haus recently expanded to include unique men’s wear and accessories. The Vanity Haus also hosts a Buy Sell Trade program which allows customers to come in and sell or trade any fashion items, as long as they are sellable and in good condition. “Being well rounded in these aspects is how The Vanity Haus stands out,” says RJ.
