The local comfort feeling of the South… that’s Gram’s Mission BBQ Palace. Born and raised in Riverside, co-owner Benita Bratton says she “remembers shopping and entertaining ourselves here and knew we belonged here, along with my son and family. This is our home and we’re looking forward to building a legacy here.” Gram’s Mission BBQ Palace was named after Benita’s paternal grandmother who she called “Gram.” She attributed her entrepreneurship and passion for cooking to her upbringing. “Our original vision of Gram’s was to open a BBQ joint where people could get good food, feel comfortable with friends and family, like at our grandmother’s house,” says Bratton. Thus the concept of Gram’s Mission BBQ Palace took shape.
Gram’s first opened in downtown Riverside across from the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa in June of 1989. There’re current location is on Main Street across from the Riverside Convention Center. A first time customer can expect “friendly, southern home style BBQ grilled to perfection with homemade BBQ sauce, along with traditional sides or fresh healthy sides for our more health cautious customers.” Their menu is comprised of freshly smoked BBQ ribs, southern style fried catfish, red snapper, and tilapia. They also have po’boy sandwiches and classic southern side dishes. Fresh veggies are purchased from downtown Riverside’s local Farmer’s Market and no one can forget about their mobile BBQ fire pit.
Gram’s Mission BBQ Palace is no stranger to the community. They have been in downtown Riverside for the past 25 years and market through word of mouth. They also donate food to local charities throughout the community when needed.
Gram’s Mission BBQ Palace is one of the participants for the first annual Downtown Riverside Celebrates Restaurant Week. They will be offering a 15% discount for Restaurant Week participants.
